When Seth was in 1st grade he came home one day and told me that he learned some bad words that day at school. The hilarity that ensued is something that has lived on in our home. If you haven’t read that post I linked to, go do it. It really is worth it.
That was not the first time I had to reprimand one of my children while laughing about what they did.
When Seth was 3, I was taking belly dancing classes. He heard me saying once a week that I was going to my belly dancing class. Now you have to understand something about our house. Body parts are just that – body parts. We call everything by it’s given name and there is no shame. Ok, that said – we were getting the children ready for bed one night when we realized Seth had taken off out the front door of the house. And he was naked. We called to him to come back and he replied, while running down the street, “I have to go to my penis dancing class!”
I have not ever laughed so hard.
With tears streaming down our faces, Jeremy and I had to tell him that was not okay and he couldn’t go running down the street naked yelling about his penis dancing class!
It is so hard sometimes as a parent to reprimand our children when they get into honest mischief. When they don’t know the difference and are so innocent, it just makes me laugh. We’ve all been there.
When it is a minor infraction and one that was innocently done, I will try really hard to stop laughing and then tell my child why what they did was wrong. We talk about it and work it out together.
When it is bigger, like they are being sneaky and deceitful, well that is a different story. That kind of behavior calls for a punishment of some sort, typically involving doing more chores and losing privileges.
What I want to know is how you handle the mischievous children in your home?
