A Mac Family in the Microsoft Store

Last Saturday, my family and I did the unthinkable. We went to the Domain in Austin, and purposely walked into the Microsoft store. For those who know my husband, you know this is a pretty big deal. He is a die hard Apple fan. I am typing this on a Mac, we have a Macbook, iPhones and iPods in our house.

So, what would get me, and my family, to go to the Microsoft store? I was given the opportunity to work with Microsoft and The Motherhood and learn more about their stores and what they have to offer. I went into this with an open mind, I really wanted to know what the fuss was about. I’ve been to the Apple store before, and knew that these types of stores offer help and support and you can buy great products from them.

The Microsoft store takes it even further though. The bloggers participating in this program had a conference call with Melinda George, Training and Development Specialist from Microsoft. She started the call telling us all about the offerings and products at the Microsoft store. Talking to us about the Answer desk, personal training (for your device, not your body heehee!), and even the availability of the staff to give you personal shopping sessions.

What really caught my attention though was the theater space they have for community events. As Melinda started talking about this, my curiosity was peaked. Summer camps, birthday parties, homeschool classes, Boy and Girl scout badges earned…what?? This was right up my alley.

I asked more about the theater space. I learned that Microsoft really wants to work with the community and help those in their midst. Melinda told us about summer camp for kids. The camps are for kids ages 8-13, start June 3 and are 2 hours a day M-F for a week at a time. Topics for camps include: Digital Movie Madness, Digital Art Smart, Gamemasters, and Storyteller Studio. For the teenage set some stores offer an App Builder Class. And, not to be forgotten, they even have a class for the preschool set! Tech for Tots Camp focuses on kids ages 2-5 and the little ones learn keyboard skills, how to use Kinect and about technology that impacts their lives.

Now, if you are like me you are thinking, Ok, this sounds great, but it is going to be pricey! Here’s the best part – this is all FREE! Seriously, no cost at all. The only thing they ask is that parents stay in the store while kids are having their classes. Another item that caught my attention was the ages allowed in the camps. 2-5 and 8-13. Um, I have a 6 year old, what can she do? When my family visited the store, I asked the manager about this. He said that the ages are just a guideline. Kids who fall in the 6-7 age range can go to either depending on their maturity and where the parents feel they would best fit.

The "kids" playing MineCraft

While we are on the topic of free, they also host gaming events! When my family visited the store, a birthday party was just wrapping up. Mom and Dad brought their son and some of his friends, had pizza and cake and the boys got to play Kinect and XBox for the birthday party in the theater! This is a great party idea and something my kids want to do now.

When Melinda told us the Microsoft store was very kid friendly, I was dubious. I mean really? Kid friendly and computers don’t typically go together. So, we put it to the test. Middle of the afternoon on a Saturday, Jeremy and I took our 4 hooligans to the store to see what the fuss was all about.

We were pleasantly surprised! There was something for everyone! Seth and Amelia played MineCraft on a HUGE screen, Libby and Elliott played with the paint program. They all had a blast and didn’t want to leave when it was time. Jeremy and I enjoyed seeing the tablets, phones and computers. To see features on the Windows products we liked better than on our iPhones, and vice versa. We realized that both products are really great. I particularly love the touch screen options on all the computers. It made playing on the computer so much fun for my kids.

Whether you are a die hard Mac fan, or a Microsoft lover – there is something for everyone at the Microsoft store. Go check out your store and see all they have to offer. And be sure to take the kids, they will have a blast!

Minted – Not Your Average Annoucements

I am a sucker for a great card. I love business cards, greeting cards, baby announcements, and wedding announcements. I love how many options there are now for finding the perfect way to let the world know your big news.

When I got married, 11 years ago, the options were pretty limited. We did order and design our announcements online, but it was something very new and there were not many choices. I didn’t do baby announcements with Emma, Seth or Amelia – something I now regret. When Libby was born I had a photo announcement made, but it turned out looking very green, so I still have 25 cards sitting in my closet. When Elliott was born I had some darling cards made and am so glad I did.

Now that I am getting ready to have yet another child, I know that I really want to do this again. I love designing something that fits the personalities of our family and our new baby.

Recently I stumbled upon Minted. I quickly realized this is not your average company with average announcements. Whatever you need for planning your occasion, Minted has it.  Baby announcements baby shower invites, birthday invites, wedding announcements and even save the date cards! Each card is printed on high quality thick paper. They have several designers creating new designs daily. If you are a designer, you can even make something and submit it to be sold in their shop.

One thing I really love are the different options you have for announcing your big news. Since I am in baby mode, I will share with you a few of my favorite ideas for baby announcements.

I love the scalloped edges on this card. It just adds something so sweet, special and out of the ordinary.

Or how about a magnetic announcement? Oh I love this idea!! Who doesn’t want a cute baby on their refrigerator staring at them when they go to get a treat?

Maybe you have a lot of great photos of the birth or your sweet bundle you want to share. A Minted Minibook would be perfect for that. What a fun way to share the newest member of your family.

Or maybe you are a traditionalist who wants just a sweet postcard to share your news. Whatever it is, Minted has it.

With hundreds of designs to choose from, there is something that is sure to please everyone!

The great folks at Minted have offered to give one of YOU $50 to spend in their shop.

Christmas Extravaganza: Gifts from Kohls

Shopping for kids can be a struggle. I know I am not alone in this. When our children are little, we can run to the store, grab some items we deem cute and call it good. They get little input because we know they will like whatever we buy. As they grow though, it becomes more difficult. With my 8 and 6 year olds, I have to take them with me not only so they can try on said clothing, but so they can tell me if they like it or not. Oh these opinions!!

One place I have always loved shopping though is Kohls. I love that right near where the children’s clothing is, there is a nice toy selection. I tend to let them help me choose some things, and then send the group (never just one, we always employ the buddy system!) over to the toys. While I continue to shop within earshot of my hooligans, they are exploring, dreaming and scheming ways to get that cool toy they have just found.

As with most stores now, Kohls has a great website. It makes it easy to find whatever you want, clothing, toys, household items…the list goes on and on. But, their toy guide is my favorite. A new feature has been added this year allowing you to search for toys by age range. This way if you are looking for something specifically for an 8 year old boy, you don’t have to go wading through all the barbies and dress ups.

As our finale for my Christmas Extravaganza, I have a $50 gift card to give to one of YOU!! Kohls has generously offered this to you to make your holiday shopping that much easier. I hope you have enjoyed this week of giveaways. Be sure to come back tomorrow as I will have a round up of some of my favorite gift ideas for the grown ups!

Christmas Extravaganza: What’s on their lists?

This is my last post for the year in a series for Hallmark. I have absolutely loved working with such an amazing company for the last 18 months. I feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to share my stories and their product with you. All words, opinions and thoughts are my own.

When my children were younger, I loved sitting down with them to help them write their letters to Santa. We always wrote them in proper letter form because how could Santa reply if we didn’t? I encouraged them not just to ask for things, but to inquire of Santa how he is doing, how are the reindeer, etc. I wanted them to make it personal, and learn not to just ask ask ask for things.

This year it all went down the crapper. Without my knowledge all 3 of the big kids wrote their own “letters”. Libby’s is a series of scribbles on a page and she tells me it reads, Dear Santa, I want a Lalaloopsy doll, a Flynn Ryder, a baby Ariel, new crayons, new sketchbooks and something else Mom can’t remember now. Amelia and Seth’s letters aren’t even letters though. They are lists. It is their list of demands wants. Amelia’s number one want this year is a Pogo Stick. Seth wants Avatar abilities. Guess who is getting what is on their list?

I love seeing what is on my children’s lists. Typically I know most of what will appear there, but sometimes they will surprise me. For example, it was no surprise that Seth wanted more origami paper, tape and LOTS of sketchbooks. But I had no idea he wanted a DS 3 complete with some game about aliens. Amelia’s request for a pogo stick, paper, tape, markers and Ramona Forever didn’t surprise me – but the backpack with wheels totally threw me for a loop. It’s fun for me to see what they want, and what they write without my prompting or help.

I love this time of year. I love the magic of Christmas and buying things for my children they asked for, and things they didn’t. I love seeing the look of surprise, joy and excitement on Christmas morning when they see that Santa did indeed read their lists.

What is on your children’s Christmas lists this year?

For day 3 of my Christmas Extravaganza I have a Hallmark prize pack for you! We love the Hallmark recordable and interactive storybooks around here. It is so fun for my children to be read to and to interact with the books. This prize pack includes the recordable story book, All I Want for Christmas (complete with Mickey and friends!) and two interactive storybooks – A Visit to the North Pole and A Day at Fairy Grandmother’s.

Just like the other giveaways, this one is super easy to enter! Good luck and be sure to check out the other 2 giveaways going on right now!!

Christmas Extravaganza: For Your Little Princess (or Prince)

Liberty is obsessed with dolls right now. I remember Amelia really loving her dolls, but never in this way. Libby has always been one to be more sentimental about stuffed animals and lovies, so I’m really not sure why I’m surprised.

She has more dolls than I can count, and most of their names change on a daily basis. There is Rapunzel, Anna, Renda, Susan, Mimi, DeeDee…the list goes on and on. To make matters worse for my old brain that can’t keep her babies names straight – the only thing she has asked for this year for Christmas are dolls. Baby Ariel, Lalaloopsy…if it is a doll, she wants it.

She got the Rapunzel doll for her birthday this year. She loves Rapunzel and has her with her constantly. One day she was sitting on my lap while I was working and she saw this picture.

Do you know who this ruggedly handsome boy doll is? If you are a Mother to a girl I am sure you said, “Oh that’s Flynn Ryder!”.  Yes, yes it is. She went berserk. I have not heard anything other than how she needs to have a Flynn Ryder doll for her Rapunzel. Rapunzel needs to have a best friend, and since they are just kids they won’t be getting married for a long time, but can be best friends now. Oh the imagination on this girl.

I have been lucky enough to work with TollyTots in the past, and when they offered to send me one of the Disney Princes from their new Toddler Prince line, I jumped at it. Having the choice of Prince Eric, Prince Charming or Flynn Ryder, I knew who I had to choose.

Now I gotta say, I don’t think these little Prince dolls are just for girls. Seth would have loved Flynn Ryder when he was younger, and I know Elliott would love any of them! What little boy wouldn’t love a doll that is a BOY??

This wouldn’t be much of a Christmas Extravaganza if I didn’t have one of these awesome dolls to giveaway now would it? Easy peasy, go enter and good luck!
